Boarding Accommodation
About twenty-five percent of Prep pupils board at Treverton.
The atmosphere is relaxed, happy, personal and caring. Boys live in "chalets" and are allocated beds in living areas with two or four boys to a room. Girls are accomodated in Burdett House, with two to a cubicle.
Both chalets and Burdett House have a lounge/games room, and accomodation for adult boarding staff who have full-time responsibility for, and a full-time presence with the boarders.
Hostels are heated in winter. Meals, Medical Matters & Money
Catered meals are served in a central dining hall; special dietary needs are taken care of.
The sickbay, under the care of a full-time nursing sister and resident nursing aid, caters for all ailments; a doctor is on call and visits to a dentist can be arranged. Referrals are made to specialists in Pietermaritzburg if required. Prescription medication is dispensed three times a day.
Stationery, tuck, sports equipment and phone cards are available on campus. Pocket money is handed out weekly by the hostel staff.
Daily Routine
Boaders rise at 06h00 and breakfast at 07h00. The school day starts at 07h30, and all pupils attend bi-weekly assembly. Snacks are served at 10h00 and there is a ten minute break at 12h00.
Preschool and Reception classes end their day at 12h00, Grades 1 and 2 at 12h30 and the rest at 13h30, when lunch is served for boarders and those day-scholars who request it.
After sport, boarders have a block period that includes supervised homework, free time, supper and showers.
A staggered bedtime from 19h15 to 20h15 concludes the boarding school day. Free time & Fun
At weekends there is free time from Saturday after sport until Sunday evening; there is always a great deal of activity, laughter and happy noise.
Some of the boarders will be on their bikes, scooters or roller blades; some will be having a fashion show or a singing and dancing competition in dorm; some will be building forts and having "battles" in wildlife, and some will be sitting quietly playing board games. You will also find some of the pupils gardening, painting, walking dogs, baking, serving teas and helping around the school.
At least once a day there is a marathon hockey, soccer, touch rugby or cricket game, where everyone - Grades 1 to 7 and boarding staff - is involved.
Prep Boarding is really a "home from home". The adult care-givers are deeply committed to and involved in the lives of the pupils - they are always found in the thick of whatever activity is on the go and give support wherever possible at weekends.
"Boarding rocks!" says Brent in Grade 5. "I have lots of fun in Boarding," says Bops in Grade 3. "I love boarding because we do nice stuff and we have a nice area with lots to play with!" says Tayler in Grade 2. "Boarding gives you a good feeling and it's fun on the weekend," says Jethro in Grade 5. "It's like having one big family!" says Lee in Grade 3.
There is definitely something very special about Treverton-style Preparatory boarding. The unity and sense of family is profoundly "there" as you will see for yourselves when you visit.
